EGDS

Esophagogastroduodenoscopy is a diagnostic procedure for visual examination with the help of the gastroscope of the walls of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum. The method is highly effective, since the specialist receives information visually, in real time. This allows you to identify a variety of diseases, including polyps and tumors, stomach and bowel ulcers, gastritis, esophagitis and other diseases.

The procedure is prescribed if there is a suspicion of bleeding in the stomach, duodenum or esophagus, the presence of ulcers and diseases of these organs. Less commonly, it is used as a refining analysis for the accurate diagnosis of other diseases not directly related to these organs.

When esophagogastroduodenoscopy is performed, the patient lays on the left side, after which the specialist conducts local anesthesia of the pharynx and root of the tongue, and also installs a mouthpiece that prevents damage to the teeth or gastroscope during the procedure.

The gastroscope is inserted into the esophagus through the mouth, and there may be a urge to vomit and discomfort, which can be amplified in case of increased nervous tension. For this reason, the patient takes sedatives before the procedure.

EGDS is a method of examination with a low probability of complications. Elderly, people with heart failure, anemia, lung pathologies and a number of other disorders should be treated with extreme caution, as these factors create an increased risk of complications.
